I have stared at this painting at The Art Institute of Chicago at least ten times.  My mother was the first person to ever show it to me.  My mother is adopted and she told me that when she was a little girl, she would go to the museum and look at this painting and pretend that this was her real mother and that she was sick and that’s why she had to give my mother up for adoption.
